ACDP says Hamas Visit to SA in face of Govt silence on Hamas' violence and incitement to murder undermines democratic values

"Hamas, like Boko Haram and Al Shabab, is an Islamist extremist movement committed to extending the global Islamic Caliphate through radical violence” – Cheryllyn Dudley

ACDP MP and Member of Parliaments International Relations Committee said today that, “the ACDP is deeply disturbed by governments silence in the face of Hamas' vicious terror attacks on Jewish people and their calls for ongoing deadly attacks on Jewish people.

Government's silence is even more troubling as on the same day that the Israeli media reported Hamas calling on its members to carry out suicide bombings against Israelis, South Africa's African National Congress (ANC), the ruling party, hosted Hamas head Khaled Mashaal and his delegation in South Africa.”

According to South Africa's Radio Islam, Hamas' 'political and decision making body is visiting South Africa to engage with the leadership of the ANC on the party’s shared vision of self-determination for the Palestinian people and a free, independent and sovereign state of Palestine liberated from Israeli occupation.'

Dudley said that, “During the past few weeks of shocking violence targeting Israeli people, Hamas has made no secret of their full support of the violent attacks.

While the ACDP recognizes that Hamas is the guest of the ANC and not the Government, in the face of on-going vicious attacks and incitement to violence against Israeli People by Hamas - Governments failure to condemn the violence creates the perception that violence and incitement to violence is condoned and even applauded!

The ideology, values, aims and strategies of Hamas are out of sync with the stated principles of the ANC, as embodied in the Freedom Charter.

At its recent National General Council, the ANC reaffirmed its support for a negotiated, two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Hamas, by contrast, does not support, nor has it ever supported, the creation of an independent Palestinian state co-existing in peace alongside Israel. Instead, its charter explicitly stipulates that no negotiated settlement is possible in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians with Jihad being the only solution.

Hamas makes no apology for wanting to destroy Israel altogether on grounds of race and religion.

Hamas, like Boko Haram and Al Shabab, is an Islamist extremist movement committed to extending the global Islamic Caliphate through radical violent means to every inch of Israel and beyond. In the kind of state it envisages, there would be no room for the human values of democracy, freedom of religion and gender equality.

If the purpose of the ANC meeting with Hamas is a genuine effort to discuss concerns and to encourage greater commitment to funding a peaceful resolution of the conflict the ACDP would support such efforts - the perception however is quite the opposite and we strongly oppose initiatives that condone and glorify violence and hatred.”
